Welcome to Munheon Seowon

Discover the spiritual home of Korean Neo-confucianism.

Munheon Seowon is one of Korea's most significant Confucian academies, dedicated to the great scholars Yi Gok (1298–1351) and Yi Saek (1328–1396).

Founded in 1594 and rebuilt in 1610 after the Imjin War, the academy has preserved the spirit of scholarship, education, and respect for virtue for more than 400 years.

What is a Seowon?

A Seowon is a traditional Korean Confucian academy that served as both a place of learning and a shrine honoring distinguished scholars. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), Seowon played an important role in education, scholarship, and the cultivation of moral values. Today, they are treasured cultural heritage sites that preserve Korea's Confucian traditions and architectural beauty.
